- Gather, analyze, and interpret data about components of the solar system (DOK 1-2)
- Utilize direct and indirect evidence to investigate the components of the solar system (DOK 1-2)
- Gather, analyze, and interpret data about the Sunrise and Sunset, and Moon movements and phases (DOK 1-2)
- Develop a scientific explanation regarding relationships of the components of the solar system (DOK 1-3)

Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Critically assess elements and characteristics of the solar system
- Identify and define attributes of the solar system
- Interpret data regarding moon phases and planetary movements
- Utilize technology based tools to collect data and analyze research topics.

- As a class, figure out the order of the planets.

transitions
- Students will be expected to transition from activity to video quietly.

- Some students will research with magazines and books, some will use computers.
- Students will rotate research devices as need be.
- Once ample research time is given students will be asked to quietly and courteously gather the supplies needed to create their visual presentations.
tEACHING SEQUENCE
Watch videos:
Bill Nye Episode 19 - Outer Space
Review the information students learned about the objects in our galaxy and solar system from the instructional video.
As a class, discuss:
Break the class into pairs or groups.
Tell students that they will be making poster presentations.
Students pairs/groups will be assigned specific planets to research.
Groups are to make posters with drawings and/or cut out, photocopied, or printed images of the planetary objects they are researching.
Students will use computers/internet, magazines etc. to research their assigned planet.
Each poster must include an introduction and outline of their planet, along with 10 captivating facts in a noticeable spot on the poster.
The posters should be dynamic and creative.
Each group will prepare a 2-3 minute presentation about the planet that they researched.
Presentations must address the following questions:
During presentations students will fill out worksheet, labeling information for each individual planet.

Closure
- After presentations, presenters may call on 3 student to share what they thought was done well with their project.
- As a class, rotate around the classroom and have each student share 2 things that they learned about the solar system that they did not know before.
Reflections
In science journals, students should write down as many things as they can about what they learned about the solar system, in 3-5minutes. After that, they will have 1-2 minutes to write about what they are still curious about or what they would like to learn about the solar system.
